SIIA, ABER and ERIA Roundtable: APEC Beyond the Chile Summit
This roundtable was the first in a series of four 1.5 track dialogues organised by ABER and SIIA in partnership with ERIA focusing on the importance of strengthening ASEAN centrality and its role in collective regional leadership given the challenging times the region now faces. This first dialogue looked at ASEAN centrality in the APEC forum. The roundtable identified the need discuss the strategic vision for a post-2020 APEC that can be carried forward by ASEAN members as a central coalition within APEC. In particular, the meeting saw the APEC summit in Malaysia as a key forum through which to develop an agenda for APEC as well as its vision going forward, akin to the Bogor Goals set out in 1994. The roundtable concluded that a future APEC agenda should build on the three core principles that have guided APEC from the beginning—openness, evolution and equality—while including a fourth, to recognise the challenges facing economies today: the need for shared prosperity.
